She feared herself
She feared
that her scoured cheeks were not tear-stained enough
that her sombre eyes were not morbid enough
that her fearful mind was not diabolical enough
Nothing about her was enough

For she bore the weight of being the
staccato of their prayers
And every morning she woke up
with the hope of breaking the note
