A Barbed Existence

It was his first day out of prison
first day out of his home

His skin
diluted like a meteor into ashes
his eyes
defied like the gravity to a bird
his mouth
engraved like the cracks on a glass window
his soul
lost like a desert to a sea

It was his first day out of prison
first day out of his home
yesterday he was to atone for
a crime he never committed
a night later he is an innocent man
He felt the same
as he did twenty three years ago

In order to hate the boundless
he had, for far too long loved
the bars of his cell
to ever change from the person
he was twenty three years ago
